Lauwersoog is a small fishing village on the border of Groningen and Friesland. For many, it is mainly known as ‘the place from the boat to Schiermonnikoog’ but there is plenty to see and discover in the village and in its beautiful surroundings.
The Lauwersmeer National Park consists of the Lauwersmeer and reclaimed land, where nature can run wild. There is plenty of sailing on the lake with sailboats, canoes, sloops, SUP boards and more. You can hire these at, for example, De Lauwer, near Baayvilla's.
Around Lauwersmeer, you can make a cycle tour of about 45 kilometres. Along the way, you pass several pavilions and restaurants for a well-earned cup of coffee or a drink.
There are several restaurants in Lauwersoog itself, especially in and around the harbour. Our favourite is ‘t Ailand, in the middle of the harbour. From the roof terrace you have a beautiful view over the Wadden Sea and can see Schiermonnikoog in the distance. The menu mainly features delicious fresh fish dishes, such as fresh oysters from the Wadden (the house speciality), fishcakes and shrimp cocktail.
