4 Questions for Karlijn Visser of Holistik

Zeegser Duinen

Karlijn Visser of lifestyle magazine Holistik booked a house at Dutchen with her family no less than twice in December 2022. She liked it so much the first time, she decided to spend Christmas together at Park de Zeegser Duinen as well. After her stay, we asked Karlijn four questions.

Karlijn's experiences

Dutchen's key words are Pure, Fine & Distinct - do these key words match your stay at Park de Zeegser Duinen and if so, in what way?

That our mini break of three and four nights was pure, fine and different, I can confirm. The park managers are friendly and easily accessible via WhatsApp. I regularly long for the ease with which I started the day early with a walk around the Zeegser Duinen. I would listen to recorded Whatsapp messages from friends and then say something back along the lines of ‘Here Karlijn, live from the Zeegser Duinen, can you hear the sheep in the background? I don't know what I'm experiencing'. The fully equipped kitchen ensured that we cooked a lot. And speaking of ‘different from home’: our 8-person house had a number of wellness facilities worth mentioning. Think for example of a private sauna, jacuzzi and a sunshower.

Do you have tips for activities near Park de Zeegser Duinen, which you would like to share with us and others?

Ready for a moment of peace and serenity? Within 15 minutes you are in bustling Groningen. Great fun to spend a day there.

Prefer to look closer to home? Then Zuidlaren is a cosy village to go to. You can walk there from the park in about 5 quarters of an hour and get there by car in a few minutes. Some tips in Zuidlaren:

  • My mother and I couldn't keep our purse strings closed at ‘2Keerleuk’, a second-hand shop with beautiful brands.

  • We drank a well-made cappuccino with the family at ‘Klasbak’, also a cycling café. This term was unknown to me until recently but this turns out to be a clubhouse for cycling enthusiasts. Believe me, this is especially atmospheric.

  • You can eat at star level in Zuidlaren at the Vlindertuin, yum! I haven't been there myself yet but I've heard it's very tasty and the portions are generous, what a top combo!

  • The village has a well-stocked organic shop and a flower shop in a classic building, pleasing to the eye in every respect.

  • As a final tip, I can recommend the Ballooërveld walking area, a 15-minute drive from the park. This large, quiet heathland area takes you back to the Drenthe of days gone by. Navigate to ‘Schaapskooi Balloo’ (Crabbeweg 2) and park the car here. In August, the heather is in bloom and this area can certainly pass for ‘magical’.

What memory of the stay has stayed with you?

That the house was spacious enough for everyone to do their thing. For example, on a Sunday afternoon the rest of my family was watching football (the World Cup) and I was sitting at the kitchen table with my nose in my study books. Being together where there is still room to withdraw (energetically) is very valuable to me. I won't easily forget the conversations that took place during our stay at the inviting large kitchen table. We listened a lot to music together; in particular to a song with which my mother has a special connection and whose singer died when we stayed at Park de Zeegser Duinen, ‘Songbird’ by Fleetwood Mac.

What zen factor would you give the surroundings of Park de Zeegser Duinen?

A very high one! The combination of comfortable accommodation with a nature reserve on its doorstep is an oasis of calm for a city trio like me. The fresh air, wandering flocks of sheep and a cottage that invites outdoor living make me already look forward to another stay.
