Schoorl: Bad weather tips with children

Known for its beautiful dunes and vast beaches, Schoorl is a wonderful destination for a family holiday in North Holland. Unfortunately, the weather in the Netherlands can sometimes throw a spanner in the works. Not to worry, there are plenty of fun activities to do in Schoorl when the weather is bad. In this article, we share our top 10 activities with children. The distances are calculated from our holiday parks Park Duynvoet, Villapark Mooi Schoorl, Park Weideduyn and Park Buiten Bergen in Schoorl.

Play paradise De Holle Bolle Boom (11 minutes away)

Speelparadijs De Holle Bolle Boom is an indoor play paradise in Tuitjenhorn, North Holland. It is an ideal place to take the kids when the weather is bad because here they can have hours of fun in the various play zones, which are divided into play, splash and romp. Playing' can be done in the indoor playground and 'splashing' in the tropical indoor water playground, both suitable for children between 0 and 11 years old. In good weather, you can 'romp' around in the outdoor water park. For parents, there is a friendly catering facility where you can enjoy a snack and a drink while the children play.

Swimming at the Hoornse Vaart (15 minutes away)

When it rains, swimming is always a good idea. The Hoornse Vaart is a large swimming pool with several pools, slides and play equipment. Here the kids will entertain themselves for a few hours. The pool has spacious changing rooms with lockers and there is a catering facility where you can eat and drink something.

Trampoline jumping at Street Jump Alkmaar (22 minutes away)

Street Jump Alkmaar is an indoor trampoline park in Alkmaar where you can enjoy jumping and exercising. The park has different zones, such as the Main Arena, Dodgeball Arena, Basketball Arena, Foam Pit and many more. You can book online to be sure of your spot. The park has lockers where you can safely store your belongings and there is a catering facility where you can enjoy a snack and a drink.

Visit a cinema (22 minutes away)

Go catch a movie together in the cinema and you won't notice the bad weather. In Alkmaar, you will find Vue cinema with different theatres and films for young and old.

Visit an indoor playground (19 minutes away)

If you are looking for an indoor place where the kids can romp around, go to an indoor playground. There are several indoor playgrounds near Schoorl where children can climb, jump and play, for example at Monkey Town Alkmaar or Ballorig Heerhugowaard.

Jeu de Boules at Boules Bite Bar Alkmaar (15 minutes away)

Boules Bite Bar Alkmaar is a unique location in the centre of Alkmaar where you can eat, drink and play a game of petanque. It is a perfect outing with friends or family in bad weather. The concept of Boules Bite Bar Alkmaar is simple: you can book a jeu de boules court and have a drink together afterwards. The game is easy to learn and no experience is required. A fun activity for everyone, regardless of age and experience.

Climbing at De Broekerberg & bowling at De Broekerberg (15 minutes away)

In bad weather, the climbing hall at De Broekerberg in Broek op Langedijk is an ideal location to get active. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced climber, there are plenty of challenges for everyone. Every first Wednesday of the month (18.30-19.30) and every third Saturday of the month (12.30-13.30) there is a free trial lesson for children,for which you can register via this link . Suitable for children from six years old.

On the same site you will find GEUS®; here you can bowl on no fewer than 10 bowling lanes, each suitable for 6 people. You can adjust the bumpers on the bowling lanes per person, keeping the challenge for children and adults the same. There are also special light balls and unrolling racks for the kids. A simple restaurant is available.

Formule 1 simulation at Racesquare (17 minutes away)

Racesquare Alkmaar is the place for real racing fans from 8 years and up in Alkmaar. Here you can race on 1,000 m2 with a race simulator over all Formula 1 circuits of the world. For families with young drivers, there are special Kids & Family races at a reduced rate. After racing, you can visit the cosy catering establishment at Racesquare Alkmaar.

Go the the Sea Aquarium (19 minutes away)

The Sea Aquarium is located in Bergen aan Zee, near Schoorl. Here, children can learn all about marine life. There are several aquariums on display and regular feeding demonstrations.

Visit a museum (30 minutes away)

In the Huis van Hilde you can explore the past and you will come face to face with the ancestors of North Holland. Children experience an unforgettable afternoon in the ArcheoLab with educational games and activities. Here, they can actually walk in the shoes of an archaeologist and work with unique archaeological objects.

Or would you rather play in a castle, almost like a real prince or princess? The accompanying museum café offers a wide choice of drinks, snacks and fresh pastries; mostly local and with a nod to the past. In tjhe Marine Museum in Den Helder there are several activities and attractions suitable for younger visitors. Explore the submarine Tuna, take a cruise, play in the Marine Museum play ship, visit the child-friendly exhibitions such as "SOS, a ship is sinking!" or do a scavenger hunt (available at the ticket office).

Museum Kranenburgh is a museum of modern art that hosts all kinds of exhibitions. Children can participate in special workshops and guided tours here.
