Hoorn grew from a small port town to become an important trading centre of the Dutch East India Company (VOC). Because of its strategic location and access to trade routes, Hoorn played a major role in the Golden Age, a time of prosperity and wealth. You can still see that wealth all around you in the impressive historic facades and architecture of the old town, the many museums, picturesque streets and harbours. Hoorn is like an open-air museum where past times are still tangible.
Hoorn harbours
The harbour town of Hoorn is situated on the 'Marker lake'. The town has six harbours: Grashaven, Buitenhaven, Binnenhaven, WSV Hoorn, De Karperskuyl and Marina Kaap Hoorn. They are all easily accessible from the direction of Enkhuizen/Medemblik and Edam/Volendam/Marken. The picturesque harbours have sufficient moorings and are equipped with all modern conveniences.
Shopping city Hoorn
In the centre of Hoorn you will find about 460 shops and catering outlets close to each other. Large department stores, well-known retail chains, fresh produce specialists and specialist shops, but also small boutiques with unusual clothing and fun, traditional items. In and near the shopping streets, you will find plenty of cafés, lunchrooms and restaurants, with many pleasant terraces in the summer.
Museums and culture
Lovers of history, art and culture will enjoy Hoorn. The city houses various monuments, museums, exhibitions, galleries and studios. History comes alive in the Westfries Museum, Museum of the Twentieth Century, Museum Steam Tram, Centrum Varend Erfgoed, and the Oudheidskamer Nederlandse Kaap-Hoornvaarders. There are also many statues and works of art outside, making a walk through the city centre a cultural experience in itself. You can go to a performance in Schouwburg Het Park and Theater het Pakhuis. Prefer to catch a movie? That is possible at Cinema Oostereiland.
Hoorn market
Every Saturday, there is a large market of around 50 stalls in the town centre. In the summer months, the themed Wednesday markets add to the cosiness of the city centre. Several shopping streets offer a varied market with art, curiosities, used books and creative trade. There is also plenty of entertainment to give visitors a great day out.
